PORTRAIT FROM A PHOTO
Donald R. Burgett joined the US Army in 1943, became a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne (A 1/ 506 PIR) and fought in all four of Europes major operations: D-Day, Operation Market-Garden, Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and the final invasion of Germany. Wounded three times, he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. Don has written four books about his war experience; CURRAHEE! • A Screaming Eagle at Normandy The painting you see here, (Oil on canvas) is from a photo taken in the parking lot of a restaurant in Flint, Michigan in 2003. Don and his wife Twyla are gracious hosts, and it is always a highlight of my visits to Michigan to meet with them. As I have completed many photo restoration and art projects for the military community, it was only natural to want to paint as interesting a man as Don. And an honor to be able to call him friend. -Joe Satterwhite- All photography and art © J. Satterwhite |
